Phenix Systems is a 3D printing company located in Riom, France. Phenix Systems has recently been acquired by 3D Systems in June, 2013. Phenix makes 3D printers that use direct metal laser sintering. Phenix Systems 3D printer use powder materials such as stainless steel, non-ferrous alloys, precious metals, and alumina.
How Direct Metal Laser Sintering WorksFirst, the user creates a 3D model in 3D modeling software and saves it as an STL file. Then, the STL is sent to the printer's interfacing software that slices the digital model into sections and determine how the layers will be printed. Then a layer of metal powder is depostited on the print bed and fused in the shape of the part by a laser. A fresh layer of powder is added and is fused by the layer. Unsintered powder builds up around the part and acts as support material. The process of layering and sintering the powder is repeated until the 3D part is complete. The part is then removed from the powder and cleaned.
History of Phenix SystemsPhenix Systems was founded in 2000. The direct metal laser sintering process was developed by the Study Group of Heterogeneous Materials Laboratory in the National School of Industrial Ceramics. In 2013, 3D Systems merged with Phenix Systems.
