Slic3r is free, open-source software that converts 3D modeling STL, AMF, and OBJ files into G-code so that the digital model can be 3D printed. Slic3r runs on Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. Alessandro Ranellucci et al. began development of Slic3r in 2011.

How Slic3r Works

First, users can download Slic3r for free. Then users can save their 3D model as an STL, AMF, or OBJ file and export the file to Slic3r. Slic3r then slices the digital model into sections and determines how the layers will be printed. This process generates G-code, which is then sent to the 3D printer where the part will be printed.
